Authentic doubt irritates and inhibits, in the perception that belief is the fact that on which just one is prepared to act.[1] It occurs from confrontation with some specific recalcitrant subject of truth (which Dewey known as a "problem"), which unsettles our belief in some precise proposition. Inquiry is then the rationally self-controlled means of aiming to return to a settled point out of belief about the subject. Notice that anti-skepticism is a response to contemporary tutorial skepticism within the wake of Descartes. The pragmatist insistence that all know-how is tentative is very congenial into the older skeptical custom.
